RATS Report 3-2-2019
A group of seventeen enthusiastic runners and walkers headed to Nelligen for a once popular run that had not been attempted by the Rats in over 13 years.
The group met in Ulladulla and, after a much-needed debate about the pronunciation of ‘ Nelligen’, car-pooled to The River Road where the run began.
The walkers set off on a 15km return trip while the runners continued all the way along the 20km track to Shallow Crossing. The route provided spectacular views of the Clyde River and surrounding farmlands and the well maintained gravel track was a pleasure to run on. Although stunning, the scenery was not enough to distract from the summer heat and the unexpectedly steep inclines. Luckily, John was there in the support vehicle to shepherd the tired, thirsty runners to the finish line.
Upon reaching the end point Dave was disappointed at having only done 19kms and decided to head back up the hill to doing an extra kilometre. The others, who lacked the stamina and willpower to do anything else, immediately took a well-earned dip in the river to cool off.
The entire group then headed back to Bateman’s Bay for coffee and a delicious breakfast at JJ’s at The Marina. They all agreed that it was a truly fantastic run and well worth the extra drive time to get there. There was also some talk of including it as a regular feature in the Rats’ running calendar.
Thank you to everyone who offered to drive others out to Nelligan. The runners would also like to give a special thanks to John and Bob who gave up their time and vehicles to ferry us all back from Shallow Crossing.
The Ulladulla RATS would like to congratulate Nicole Rattenbury for her amazing effort in the Sydney Morning Herald Cole Classic 5km ocean swim. Great work Nicole!
