I'm the former coach of the Qatar National Triathlon team, & coach online athletes of various abilities around the globe. I still compete sparsely to stay active & in touch with what I preach. My coaching approach is pragmatic, progressive & individualized. I emphasize that my athletes don't follow my programs – but rather, my programs follow my athletes, according to their objectives, physiology, psychology, & feedback.
I started triathlon in the fall of 2000 after being inspired by Simon Whitfield
’s victory at the Sydney Olympics & Peter Reid
’s win in @ The Kona Ironman World Championships a month later. I have been living & breathing triathlon ever since. I come from a strong swimming background, with The Island Swimming Club
in Victoria, British-Columbia. During this period, I trained regularly with eventual 2 X Olympic Medalist (1500m freestyle
) Ryan Cochrane
I was a resident athlete at The PacificSport
Canadian National Triathlon Center for 4 years. As well to represent Canada @ 3 Junior Elite World Championships. I then spend 6 months training @ The High Altitude Training Center
in the Kenyan village of Iten, with some of the top runners/coaches in the world. Soon after, I turned pro with TeamTBB
& achieved top 5 performances in officially sanctioned ITU, 5i50, 70.3 & Ironman events. The highlights were winning an ITU Long Distance World Cup, being ranked 14th in the world in the ITU Long Distance rankings @ the end of 2008, & finishing 2nd @ the Laguna Phuket Triathlon (The Race of Legends
) to the then reigning Olympic Champion, as well to future Ironman World Champion, & world record holder, Jan Frodeno.
I started coaching in 2009, & have been doing it full-time since 2013. I've trained various corporate age group teams for on-going years, as well as an elite development team for 4 years that was sponsored by Alaska Milk Corporation
, & National Team athletes for the Philippines & Indonesia. Then over the years, I have organized, promote, hosted or co-hosted training camps in Spain, South Korea, The Philippines, & Malaysia. Recently I was the head coach of The TriClub Doha
in Qatar, with 500+ members.
Performance aside, I work with numerous age groupers who are simply looking to live a healthier lifestyle, stay injury-free, enjoy the process/races or even follow a walk/run program. I believe that the greatest positive aspect of triathlon is that almost anybody can do it, and into very late adulthood!
I use the popular online training software TrainingPeaks
to organize/customize my athlete's day-to-day schedule & Garmin Connect
to monitor their activities. I'm also a regular user of bio-feedback for: swimming - cycling - running. As well as enjoying discussing a simple, healthy, & logical approach to general/sports nutrition.
