Inspiration at Ironman UK & Frankfurt!

July 19

Barbara Tettenborn won her Age Group at Ironman Frankfurt and became European Champion! Of course she also qualified for Hawaii! I’m more than happy that Barbara could pull off a dominating race, leading from the start to finish. Barbara is an incredibly powerful women and full of energy. Working as a Professor of Neurology her training schedule changes every week due to meetings, lectures and business trips. Being able to do the training required to dominate an age group, Barbara truly is a role model in time management, dedication and joie de vivre. I’m looking forward already a lot to get her ready for Kona. Big congrats again, Barbara!

Also in Frankfurt, Mihai Vigariu had a great race, placing TOP 20 in his age group in 9:36:50 - a 20min improvement to last years race in Frankfurt despite a 5k longer bike course. Mihai already just recently became Romanian Long Distance National Champion and already qualified for the World Champs at South Africa and Hawaii earlier. Racing Ironman Frankfurt was another step towards racing Hawaii, fine-tuning pacing, race strategy and nutrition. Great to see steady progress with every of Mihai’s races!

At Ironman UK Victor had a great race, finished 6th in his AG and got his Kona slot! I’m super, super happy for him! When Victor joined my squad some 18 months ago, the reason was to help him qualify for the big dance. We put in a strategy, changed his training approach, swim stroke and nutrition and saw big improvements from race to race. At Ironman Malaysia and Lanzarote Victor was already close, but always missed the Kona slot by a few places. Ironman UK last weekend was his strongest race so far. He had detailed instructions at which power to ride und nailed that number by 1 Watt. That, together with proper race nutrition ensured that he could run a strong marathon. It was not an easy race, but a hard and honest earned Kona ticket. The slot allocation was so emotional. I’m just super happy, that Victor could reach his goal!

Finally Salim Mohamed had a strong performance at Ironman UK, finishing an excellent 12th in his age group with a time of 10:06h. Salim trains with great consistency and dedication, never missing a session. He had a very disappointing race in Lanzarote (due to an infection as we worked out after the race). I was more than happy to see him bounce back so strong and realizing all the progress we saw in training on race day. Good swim, well paced bike (he also had a power number to pace his ride and nailed it to the Watt!) and a blistering fast marathon of 3:19h - the fastest in his age group. With all the progress in Salim's training, it’s just a matter of time until he wins a Kona slot. The race on Sunday was a huge step in the right direction. Very well done, Salim!
