Last weekend was very exciting for me as a coach as it was the first real test of fitness for many of my athletes.
Five of my athletes were racing the 70.3 in Rapperswil. Most of them knew the racecourse quite well because they life nearby.
Stephan Meinecke had a great swim as usual. He exited the water after 26min, only 2s behind the age group leader. Stephan followed the pacing plan very well and could keep his second position on the bike. It was very hot during the run this year and the age group victory was out of reach quite early in the run. Stephan finished the race after 4hrs26min in second place of the 45-49 age group. This is a great result as the last “real” test before Ironman Klagenfurt in July!
For Rebecca Fondermann the 70.3 in Rapperswil was her comeback race on the 70.3 distance after she had a severe surgery last year. The built up was really good and all of the test races went very well. Especially the 1:26hr half marathon earlier in April showed what she will be capable of. After an average swim she followed our pacing strategy to perfection. Her patience on the bike was rewarded with great legs for the run. This was a big advantage in the heat. Rebecca delivered the fastest run in her agegroup and could finish the race in second place of the 35-39 age group! This leaves us very confident for the Challenge Roth in July!
Cornelia Stähli had a great day in Rapperswil as well. Her swim was 1min faster compared to last year. Like Rebecca, Cornelia was able to pace herself almost perfect on the bike and this got rewarded with a 6min improvement compared to last year. But also the run went very well for her. A 1:39 half marathon was one of the fastest runs in her age group and she could finish the race just over 5hrs in 6th place of the 30-34 agegroup. Only 3min were missing for a spot on the podium. I am sure that a podium finish will happen very soon for Cornelia!
Marco Schönman and Florian Blumenthal could both improve their last year’s ranks and finished the race in 45th and 25th place of the 35-39 agegroup.
Florian´s pacing was a bit too aggressive in the beginning and he suffered a lot from the heat on the run. Marco could improve his bike split by 5min compared to last year and had a solid run in the heat. Ironman Zürich will be the next big goal for both of them.
Last but not least Hardy Wiedemann did the German middle distance championships in Ingolstadt. He had a very good swim and exited the water just over 30min after the 2km swim. The swim was followed by a strong ride (2:15hrs for 87km) and gave him a great position for the run. After a very good run Hardy could finish the race after 4hrs12min on the podium of the 40-44 age group! But in the end this race was just a final test before Ironman Klagenfurt ;-).
